YORKTOWN -- The Stockdale High School powerlifting team competed in its first meet Jan. 8, and the athletes returned home with one first-place medal and several strong finishes on which to build this season.

In girls competition, Ashley Valadez earned the team’s only gold medal of the meet, as she finished first in the 114-pound class. Valadez managed a 90-pound bench press, a 200-pound squat, and a 215-pound dead lift en route to her 505-pound performance to win the gold.

On the boys side, Darion McMahan had a strong showing in the 148-pound class, as he took home a silver medal in second place. McMahan powered up 210 pounds on the bench press, nailed a 340-pound dead lift, and impressed with a 370-pound squat effort on the way to his 920-pound total.

Matt Valadez, Christian Rodriguez, and Roxy Bischak each finished sixth in their weight classes, lifting totals of 815, 825, and 580 pounds, respectively. Lacey Dugi earned a seventh-place finish in her weight class with a total lift of 395 pounds, and Perry Bone lifted a total of 730 pounds to finish 10th in his class.

The Brahma and Lady Brahma lifters will resume competition this weekend, as they travel to Poteet Jan. 22.
