LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia High School varsity baseball team will hold its first-ever alumni scrimmage game Saturday, Feb. 19, beginning at 11 a.m., between ex-baseball players from La Vernia High School and the 2011 varsity team.

The school will provide baseballs, bats, batting helmets, and catcher’s gear. Those participating will need to provide their own cleats, baseball pants, and glove. There will also be a $10 players fee to cover the cost of “game day” shirts.

The scrimmage will be conducted like a regular game. There will be umpires and all other workers required to run off a game or scrimmage. Therefore, all friends and family planning to attend the scrimmage should expect to pay a small admission fee at the gate. Alumni coming to play in the scrimmage will not have to pay to get in.

“I look forward to seeing everyone and seeing how the talent has held up,” said La Vernia Bear Head Baseball Coach John Elder. “I can’t wait to see some old players again and hope that this is an enjoyable experience that we will continue each year.

“It should make for an entertaining day where you can see old friends and get to throw the ball around a little too,” Elder added. “I know that our current baseball team will benefit from this scrimmage as well as enjoy seeing some of the past players compete again.”

In addition to the games, there will also be a concession stand for food and drinks beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Any persons interested in playing should send $10 cash or a check (payable to LVISD) to La Vernia High School, Attn: Coach John Elder, 225 Bluebonnet Road, La Vernia, TX 78121. Included with the check should be the player’s name, address, phone number, year of graduation, preferred position, and T-shirt size. The information and fee can also be delivered to Kelli Thompson at the high school office. Interested players should sign up before Friday, Feb. 4, to allow time for the T-shirt order.

For more information, call Elder at 254-493-8870 or e-mail john.elder@lvschools.net .
