Tigers take Trojans in district opener

The Floresville Tiger varsity basketball team opened District 30-4A action last Friday evening with a 71-40 victory over the Beeville Trojans. Following the home district victory, the Tigers have a season record of 17 wins and 8 losses.
After a slow start, the Tigers came from behind to take a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Tigers took full control of the contest as they outscored the Trojans 25-13 to hold a 39-22 advantage at the half.
The Tigers continued their big lead in the second half as they outscored the visitors by 6 points in each quarter. Jacob Flores was the high point for the Tigers with 14 points and made two 3-point baskets. Estevan Mendiola and Josh Barnard each scored 13 points in the game as Mendiola hit two 3-point shots and Barnard scored 10 of his points in the first half. Bobby Lusk added 7 points to the total while Colton Wallace had 6, Richard Asebedo had 6, Robert Regalado scored 5, and Charlie Albert and Daniel Bourland each had 3. Lusk and Bourland each made a 3-point shot and Wallace was the leading rebounder in the contest.
The junior varsity Tigers took a 71-21 victory over Beeville in their district opener as Jaren Medina led the team with 19 points. Also scoring in double figures were Darren Orth with 12, Justin Melton with 11 points, and Derek Moczygemba with 10.
After jumping out to a big lead, the freshman Tigers had to go into overtime before defeating Beeville 68-64. Scoring in double figures were Hector Villegas with 16, and Aaron Laskowski and Vernon Marsh, each with 15.
The Tigers will continue district play this week as they travel to Port Lavaca on Friday and to Gregory-Portland on Tuesday. The next home game will be Friday, Jan. 28, against Victoria West.
