La Vernia NHS community projects
Blood drive for Philip Ozer set
The La Vernia High School chapter of the National Honor Society ended a busy first semester of service to the community. Members took part in a wide variety of service opportunities as individuals and as an organization, both in school and in the community.
The organization continues to sponsor community blood drives through the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center. The first blood drive of the school year was held Oct. 21. A record number of students, faculty, and community members turned out to contribute 69 units of blood.
The next blood drive will be held Friday, Jan. 21, from 7:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This drive has been designated as a replacement drive to aid La Vernia resident Philip Ozer, who is battling cancer. Those who cannot attend that day may still donate in his name at other locations, by naming Wilford Hall Medical Center as his treatment site.
The organization ended the first semester by sponsoring the Santa’s Gifts project. Members solicited donations from local businesses to fill Santa’s bag. A drawing was held on Dec. 16 to win all of the items donated in Santa’s bag. The lucky winner was La Vernia High School senior Kameron Pomeroy. A total of $247 was raised and a check was presented to the Food Pantry of the La Vernia Ministerial Alliance on Dec. 18.
A big thank you goes out to the following businesses and organizations that helped make this project a success: La Vernia RadioShack, Subway, Sonic, H-E-B, Buffalo Joe’s, Lube Works, and Snow’s Vehicle Center. Thanks also to Anytime Fitness, The Tote, Always and Forever, Norman’s Home of Da Smoke, Alice Martinez from Hair Encounters, Sonya Moul from Simply Gorgeous, and Joyce Wootan of Charley’s Bags, Bling and Things.
The National Honor Society members are continuing service on the school campus by cleaning the school grounds one Saturday each month. When warmer weather arrives, the members will also take part in beautification of several areas on the high school campus.
The local chapter for the 2010-11 school year is led by President Analisa Calica, Vice President Brittany Blankenship, Secretary Kelsey Stanush, historians Stacie Gibson and Faith Ozer, and sponsor Lou Glazener.
