James Dennis “Jake” Looney, 84, of Karnes City, Texas, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011. He was born on the Hoff Ranch in Pawnee on June 15, 1926, to James L. and Inez Hoff Looney.

He graduated from Pawnee High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. Jake married Charlene Whitehead in Karnes City on June 12, 1954, and they were later blessed with two daughters. He owned and operated Looney’s Supermarket for 40 years. Jake was a member of the Karnes City Chamber of Commerce and served as president and vice president, and was on the board of directors. He was selected as the Karnes City Citizen of the Year in 2003. Jake was a member of the Karnes City Men’s Luncheon Club, a charter member of the Karnes City Rotary Club, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Karnes City Badger Booster Club, the National Rifle Association, and the United Methodist Church Administrative Board.

Jake was a very patriotic man who loved his God, family, and country. He was also a strong supporter of the Karnes City Independent School District sports programs, youth activities, and community projects. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the community.

Jake was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Evelyn Looney; and his great-grandsons, Aaron and Andrew Alvarez.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Charlene Whitehead Looney of Karnes City; his daughters, Jayma Wood and husband James of Karnes City and Melanie Witte and husband Tracy of Karnes City; his grandchildren, Jim Wood and wife Tracy of Floresville, Laurie Alvarez and husband Anthony of Karnes City, Tyler Witte of Karnes City, and Tara Witte of San Antonio; his great-grandson, Brock Wood of Floresville; and his extended family, Amy Martinez and husband Fabian of San Antonio and Jason Morales of San Antonio.

The family received visitors on Saturday, Jan. 15, from 5-8 p.m. in the Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Karnes City.

A funeral service was held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ken Houston officiating.

Interment followed the funeral service in the Karnes City Cemetery in Karnes City.

Serving as pallbearers were James Wood, Tracy Witte, Jim Wood, Tyler Witte, Anthony Alvarez, Phillip Ross, and Brock Wood.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be made in Jake’s memory to Nurses In Touch, 1815 10th St., Floresville, TX 78114, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
