Jaguars claw East Titans, Sandcrabs

With the first round of district play complete, the Floresville Jaguar basketball team is looking good. The Hoop Troop added to its impressive wins total last week with a pair of victories over Victoria East and Port Lavaca Calhoun.
On Jan. 18, the Jags welcomed Victoria East to Floresville. The Jaguars scored the first point of the game as Katie Moore sank a free throw, but then looked on as Victoria stormed back with 9 unanswered points. Brittany Aikens broke the run by Victoria as she made a trip to the charity stripe, and then added a couple more baskets to make it an 11-7 game. Erica Hernandez then hit a 3-pointer for the Jaguars as the first quarter came to an end, to make the score 11-10 in favor of Victoria.
Floresville’s Annielyn Felux scored the first basket of the second period to give the Jags their first lead since they led 1-0. Caitlin Gillum and Hernandez then added some points to make it a 16-11 lead for Floresville.
Victoria battled back and took the lead at 19-18, but Aikens dropped in a free throw to tie the game at 19-all, and Hernandez hit a basket to put Floresville up 21-19, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish again.
As the clock expired on the first half, the Jaguars held a slight lead at 30-26.
Victoria scored the first points of the second half to pull within 2 points, but Floresville extended its lead to 49-40 by the end of the third. The Jags continued that trend in the fourth, adding another 14 points to the board and locking up a 63-50 victory.
Aikens led the Hoop Troop scoring effort with 22 points on the night, followed by Hernandez with 11, and Gillum with 10. Moore scored 9 points, Shelby Leinneweber was good for 5, Felux dropped in 4, and De Havalan Watts added another 2 points.
With the Victoria East game behind them, the Jaguars turned their focus to Port Lavaca, and a long road trip to the coast Jan. 21.
In the first period of play, Floresville showed Port Lavaca what a quick team it was, as the Jags ran the floor for 21 points, while playing tough defense and holding Port Lavaca to just 6 points.
The Sandcrabs got a little offense rolling in the second period with 14 points, but were still outscored as the Jags put up 23 to take a 44-20 lead at the break.
Things continued Floresville’s way in the second half as the Hoop Troop knocked in 23 more points in the third, while holding Port Lavaca to just 12 points. The Sandcrabs had their best period of the night in the fourth, but were still bettered by Floresville, 21-20, leading to the final score of 88-52.
Aikens and Hernandez led the Jaguars with 15 points apiece, followed by Leinneweber with 13 and Felux with 10. Jessica Castro and Watts each scored 7 points, Amanda Montoya and Liesel Raabe scored 5 each, and Moore and Gillum each scored another 4 points. Lauren Milton scored 2 points in the game, and Katie Stepke tossed in a free throw.
