Pirettes continue to dominate district
POTH -- After blowing through the competition during the first round of district play, the Poth Pirettes continued to express their dominance last week as they knocked off Cotulla 72-15, and then beat down George West, 74-34.
During their Jan. 18 game with Cotulla, the Pirettes began and ended the game with total domination. Poth scored 25 points during the first period of play, while holding Cotulla to just 8 points. In the second period, things went from bad to worse for the visiting Cowgirls, as Poth allowed just 2 points to Cotulla, while tacking on another 23 of their own. As the teams broke for halftime, it was truly a one-sided affair as Poth led 48-10.
Following the break, Poth backed off on the offensive end of the floor, scoring just 12 points through eight minutes, but the defense maintained its intensity and held Cotulla to just 2 points once again. As the third stanza came to an end, it was all Poth, 60-12.
The fourth period of play was nothing more than a formality of regulation, as the game was clearly over. Poth remained conservative in its play again, scoring 12 points, while keeping Cotulla to 3 points. As the final buzzer sounded, the Cowgirls loaded onto a bus headed out of Poth with a 72-15 shellacking hanging over their heads.
Ashley Fuller led the Pirette scoring effort with 17 points, followed by Tara Dunn with 12 points and Micah Weaver with 11. Jordan Kotara and Tara Broyles each scored 6 points for Poth; Annika Eckel, Danielle Felux, and Krista Lamb each scored 5 points; and Kelli Kolodziej scored 4. Claire Raabe added another point for the Pirettes.
Things were a little tighter, though, when Poth took on George West Jan. 21 -- at least at first.
The two teams had a blistering pace during the first period of play, as a total of 32 points were scored. Poth held a slight advantage, though, and took an 18-14 lead into the second.
The defensive efforts of both teams improved during the second stanza, and Poth held George West to just 4 points. The Lady Longhorns improved, too, holding the Pirettes to 12 points. As the buzzer indicated halftime, Poth found itself with a 30-18 lead over George West.
During the half, Poth Head Coach Peggy Hosek made the adjustments necessary and found ways to motivate her team, just as she has done for more than 1,000 games. The Pirettes returned to the floor to start the third period of play, and simply lit up the Lady Longhorns for 23 more points. George West dropped in 9 points of its own, but things were looking bad for the Lady Longhorns, trailing 53-27 after three periods.
The Pirettes didn’t let up on their opponents in the final period, though, and Poth added another 21 points. George West added 7 points of its own, but it wasn’t anywhere near enough, as the Pirettes celebrated a 74-34 win to remain unbeaten in District 30-2A.
Fuller led the scoring barrage with 21 points, followed by Weaver with 15 and Broyles with 12 points. Kotara and Kolodziej each scored 8, Dunn and Raabe each scored 3 points, and Eckel and Lamb each scored another 2.
