Floresville High School Students of the Month
The January Female Student of the Month is Alicia Castro. Alicia is the 17-year-old daughter of Maria and Adalberto Castro.
Alicia is a member in good standing with numerous Floresville High School organizations, including the National Honor Society, Drama Club, Business Professionals of America, and Student Council. As a member of the Mighty Tiger Band, Alicia was named third chair in the Region Band and first chair Region and Area qualifier. She also earned a one in Solo and Ensemble. Alicia has been active in UIL Academics, competing in calculator and social studies contests. She also placed fifth at UIL District competition in poetry. For her efforts in the classroom, Alicia was awarded the Outstanding Student of the Year award for AP Spanish. She also serves as the Spanish Club president.
As a former member of the junior varsity tennis team, Alicia and her partner placed second in JV doubles at the Uvalde tournament. Alicia placed second in singles at the Floresville JV Tennis Tournament and earned numerous other medals through the season.
Despite the demands of her academic and extracurricular activities, Alicia still finds time to be active in her community. As a member of the St. Ann Catholic Church, Alicia has participated in an ACTS retreat and is a member of the church choir. She volunteered with St. Vincent de Paul and Vacation Bible School.
She is also a member of the Leo Club and was recognized with the Leo Club Excellence Award. Alicia has participated in highway-cleanup projects, has visited the elderly during Christmas and Easter, and has written letters to nursing home residents. Each Christmas, Alicia volunteers her time ringing the Salvation Army bell. She has participated in Toys for Tots, has made donations to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, and has assisted with blood drives.
Alicia spent time painting new public swing sets and assisted in spreading awareness for autism, breast cancer, and Relay For Life. Alicia also has volunteered her time with the reading roundup and the summer reading program at the Sam Fore Jr. Wilson County Public Library.
Last summer, Alicia worked for the district and was taught how to teach her autistic brother a basic morning routine.
Upon graduation in June, Alicia plans to attend American University, where she will pursue either a pre-med degree to be a neurosurgeon or a degree in international relations to be a diplomat.
The January Male Student of the Month is Herbert Watts III. Herbert is the 18-year-old son of DeHavalan and Herbert Watts Jr.
Herbert is an active member of FHS athletics. As a member of the Tiger basketball team, Herbert has been instrumental in assisting his team in earning a bi-district championship and an opportunity to advance to the Area finals in 2008-09. Last year, he and his teammates again advanced to the bi-district finals. In baseball, Herbert assisted his team in advancing to the bi-district finals last year.
Herbert’s hard work and dedication aren’t isolated to the athletic program. He works just as hard in the classroom and is a member in good standing with the National Honor Society. Herbert is also enrolled in the aerospace program at FHS. As part of that program, Herbert spent the summer completing an internship at M7 Aerospace.
Upon graduation in June, Herbert plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he will major in aerospace engineering.
