STOCKDALE -- He is remembered for his 32 years of service to the Stockdale Independent School District (ISD). In the years following his retirement, Bennie Wolff would also serve as a board member for the Wilson County Appraisal Review Board and for the Floresville Electric Light & Power System (FELPS). Now the community Wolff loved so much mourns his Jan. 20 death at the age of 74.

Wolff’s entire educational career was spent with the Stockdale ISD, said Superintendent Paul Darilek. Wolff began his career in 1961, and taught mathematics and social studies at Stockdale High School. He eventually became a counselor and then the school’s principal, before an 11-year stint as the district’s superintendent beginning in 1982. He made a brief return in 1998 to serve for three months as interim superintendent.

“Stockdale ISD was Mr. Wolff’s passion,” Darilek said. “Even though he was retired, he was always contributing to the district. One of his last duties to the district was to work for our last bond election.”

Wolff was also a dedicated member of the Wilson County Retired School Personnel, of which he was a past president. Charlie Rice, the current president of the organization, said Wolff rarely missed a meeting and most recently served on the legislative committee.

“He was very friendly and he would help you in any way possible,” Rice said of Wolff, who was a longtime friend of Rice’s father, Ralph. “He would always make you feel comfortable.”

In May 1998, Wolff became a rotating board member for FELPS, serving in that capacity until 2001. He returned to the board as Stockdale’s representative, and was the board’s chairman at the time of his death.

“I admired the man very much and respected him,” said FELPS General Manager David McMillan. “He was very good when it came to looking at financial statements. If he thought something was not right, he was not afraid to speak up and question it.”

Services were held in Stockdale Jan. 22, with interment in the Stockdale Cemetery.
