Ruth Jackson Starnes Smith, a longtime resident of Floresville, Texas, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at 7:30 p.m. in the Regency Manor nursing home in Floresville at the age of 91 years, 1 month, and 15 days.

Ruth was born on Dec. 4, 1919, in Floresville to Z.B. and Susie Myrick Jackson. She graduated from Stockdale High School and Southwest Texas Teachers College in San Marcos.

She married Ralph Starnes in Sutherland Springs on Sept. 14, 1940, and Russell Smith in Floresville on June 14, 1974. Both preceded her in death.

Ruth was a schoolteacher and then became a supervisor for the Department of Human Resources. She was a 58-year member and a Past Matron of the Floresville Chapter No. 271, Order of the Eastern Star. She loved to quilt and play dominoes with the groups at the First Baptist Church in Floresville.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; her brother, Z.B. Jackson; and her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Starnes.

Ruth is survived by her son, Billy Starnes; her daughters, Judy Starnes and Gail Fuller and husband Asa Fuller III; her grandchildren, Terri Gail Seidel and husband Randy, Asa Ralph Fuller and wife Lara, Bronson Fuller and wife Wendy, Dee Dee Hurst and husband Patrick, Tracie Marie Parson, and Thomas R. Starnes; and her great-grandchildren, Ashley Michalak and husband Mikie, Meagan and Lindsey Seidel, A.J. Cade and Braeden Fuller, Karli Fuller, Steven Bump, Dalton Perry, and Falin and Rogan Parson.

A visitation was held on Friday, Jan. 21, from 5-7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral service was celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Brother Terry Smith officiating.

An Eastern Star Funeral Ceremony was held by members from Floresville and San Antonio Chapters.

Interment followed in the Floresville City Cemetery in Floresville.

Serving as pallbearers were her grandsons, Asa Ralph Fuller, Bronson Fuller, Tommy Starnes, Tom Ray, and Randy Seidel, and nephew Leroy Starnes.

The family requests memorials be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
