ON-CALL CRISIS POOL WORKERS NEEDED. Part-time positions are available for after hours “on-call” crisis workers to respond to mental health crisis for Wilson and Karnes Counties. Duties include crisis interventions, assessments, referrals to stabilization services, and referrals for involuntary treatment services according to the Texas Mental Health Laws. You must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree in psychology, sociology, social work, nursing, etc. On-call hours are from 5 p.m.-8 a.m. weekdays, weekends and holidays vary. If selected, you must attend required training and must be able to report to designated safe sites within 1 hour of request for assessment. Emma L. Shortner, 91, of Karnes City, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011, in Kenedy.

She was born to Frank and Agnes Kutac Merecka on June 30, 1919, in Floresville. She married August W. Shortner on May 11, 1948, in Floresville.

Emma was a member of the St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Karnes City, the Altar Society, and the Rosary Circle. Emma retired in 1986 from the City Pharmacy in Karnes City, and had previously worked and managed the snack bar at the Midway Drive-in between Kenedy and Karnes City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brothers, Edwin and Edward Merecka; and her sister, Annie Loehmann.

She is survived by her son, Billy Shortner and wife Debbie of Kenedy; her daughters, Margie Redkey of Port Neches, Cathy Binney and husband Bobby of Harlingen, and Barbara Wiatrek and husband Ronald of Stockdale; her brother, Victor Merecka of Floresville; her grandchildren, Libby Shortner, Bonnie Dziedzic and husband Jeff, Katy Lennox and husband Kevin, Rebecca and Jessica Redkey, Lori, Charlie, and Mary Beth Binney, and Jenna, Tyler, and Jonathan Wiatrek; and her great-grandchildren, Sydney and Andrew Dziedzic.

A rosary was recited on Friday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Karnes City.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at 2 p.m. in the St. Cornelius Catholic Church in Karnes City.

Interment followed in the Karnes City Cemetery in Karnes City.
