Anglers qualify for Bassmaster Classic

Five anglers from Texas have qualified to compete in the 2011 Bassmaster Classic, slated for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 18-20.

The revered competition will be held on the Louisiana Delta out of New Orleans, La. -- the first Classic on those waters since Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The fishery is reportedly in excellent condition, but adapting to the impacts of those events presents additional challenges for the competitors.

Alabama leads all states with 10 residents in the 50-angler field. Oklahoma and Texas each have five; Arkansas, four; and Florida and South Carolina each have three.

The Texas qualifiers include Keith Combs of Del Rio, Todd Faircloth of Jasper, Kelly Jordon of Palestine, Gary Klein of Weatherford, and Clark Reehm of Lufkin.

Leading the field is reigning Bassmaster Classic and Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year (AOY) champion Kevin VanDam. The Kalamazoo, Mich., fisherman won his first Bassmaster Classic in 2001 on the Louisiana Delta, and is only the second angler in Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) history to hold both the Classic and Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year titles simultaneously. He now owns three Classic and six Angler of the Year titles.

The 2011 Bassmaster Classic will feature daily launches Feb. 18-20 at the Bayou Segnette State Park. Daily weigh-ins will take place at the New Orleans Arena, and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center will host the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo presented by Dick’s Sporting Goods.
