POTEET -- Things are continuing to improve for the Stockdale powerlifting team, and the athletes once again experienced success in competition as they traveled to Poteet Jan. 22.

The boys made a strong showing, as Darion McMahan finished third in the 132-pound class, and Matt Valadez finished fourth in the 148-pound category. McMahan lifted 225 pounds in the bench press, turned in a dead lift of 355 pounds, and powered up a squat of 400 pounds, more than three times his body weight. Valadez had a bench press of 195 pounds, a squat of 355 pounds, and a dead lift of 380.

During the girls competition, Ashley Valadez turned in a great performance, lifting enough weight to earn herself second-place honors in the 114-pound class. Valadez muscled up a 100-pound bench press and a 225-pound squat, and managed a dead lift of 240 pounds -- more than twice her own body weight.

Roxy Bischak also had a strong showing in her weight class, as she totaled 635 pounds, enough for sixth place. Bischak bench-pressed 115 pounds, lifted 245 pounds on the squat rack, and managed a deadlift of 275 pounds.

Lacy Dugi also competed for Stockdale. Enriquez said she did a great job, as she lifted a total of 400 pounds, an impressive figure for someone weighing just over 100 pounds herself.

“The kids did a great job,” said Stockdale Powerlifting Coach Michael Enriquez. “We all increased our totals from the last meet in Yorktown.”

The Stockdale powerlifting team will return to Yorktown Saturday, Feb. 5, for another meet.
