Poth lifters shine at Navarro powerlifting meet
Daniella Noguez (from left), Yarissa Ramon, Megan Keathley, Antoniette Price, and Jessica Coronado, all members of the Poth Pirette powerlifting team, show off their third-place team trophy following the Navarro meet Jan. 22.
GERONIMO -- The Poth High School powerlifting team may have taken an abbreviated roster to the Navarro meet Jan. 22, but the team impressed everyone around, as six of the eight lifters earned medals, and all of Poth’s lifters finished in the top 10.
Senior Anthony Fish led the Poth Pirates with his first-place finish in the 242-pound class, Antonio Cantu finished third in the 181-pound class, and David Delacruz earned a ninth-place finish in the 220-pound class.
In girls competition, Jessica Coronado earned gold in her class, and was also given the “Best Lifter Award” for the meet. Daniella Noguez also won a gold medal in her class, and she finished second in the scoring for best-lifter honors.
“If Jessica would not have gotten the award, Daniella was next in line,” said Poth Powerlifting Coach Tim Bordovsky.
In addition to the two gold medals, the Pirettes also took home a pair of silver medals, as both Yarissa Ramon and Antoinette Price finished second in their respective classes. Megan Keathley finished sixth in her class as well.
Despite only having five girls in the meet, the Pirettes still earned enough points to finish third in the team standings. Bordovsky pointed out that the two teams that finished ahead of Poth had between nine and 11 lifters per team.
“All the kids improved from the first meet, and the girls did a great job Saturday; it was very impressive to watch them lift,” Bordovsky said. “Jessica and Daniella had squats of 280 and 285, respectively, which were the best two squats of any girls at the meet -- by far.
“I can’t say enough about all the kids,” Bordovsky added. “They are working very hard and great things are going to happen for them in the future.”
The Poth powerlifting team will return to action this weekend, as the team makes a return trip to Yorktown.
