The Floresville Tigers came up with two big victories last week to finish the first round of district play with a record of three wins and two losses. The Tigers find themselves one game behind the district co-leaders, Victoria East and Port Lavaca, which both have district records of four wins and one loss. Victoria West also has a record of three wins and two losses.

Last Friday evening, the Tigers hosted the Victoria West Warriors and came away with a 65-51 victory. The Tigers led throughout the contest and held a 32-22 lead at the half. Although the Warriors closed the gap to 5 points to start the final quarter, the Tigers outscored the visitors 23-14 in the final period to pull away for the win.

Steven Mendiola led the Tigers with 15 points, while Robert Regalado scored 12; Colton Wallace, Josh Barnard, and Jacob Flores each scored 8; Charlie Albert added 7; Dominque DeWalt threw in 5; and Richard Ascebedo dropped in another 2. In the final quarter, Regalado made nine of 10 free throws, while Mendiola scored 7 of his points to lead the Tigers. Mendiola and Flores each made two 3-point baskets, while Regalado, Albert, and DeWalt each made one in the contest.

The Tigers traveled to Gregory-Portland last Tuesday evening and defeated the Wildcats by the score of 56-42. The Tigers jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter and increased that lead to 39-27 after three quarters.

Flores had a big evening as he scored 28 points, and he was followed by Regalado, who had 8. Barnard scored 7 points, Wallace had 6, Mendiola scored 4, and Albert added another 3. While Flores led the team in scoring, Wallace was a force to be dealt with rebounding the ball.

This Friday evening, Feb. 4, the Tigers will travel to Victoria to take on the East Titans, while on Tuesday, Feb. 8, the Tigers will be at home against Port Lavaca in another important district contest.
