Walker, Wagner head for New York
Rachel Walker and Chelsea Wagner, both students at La Vernia High School, have been selected for the 2011 American High School Honors Performance Series in Carnegie Hall in New York City. Rachel and Chelsea will be a part of the Honors Band. Rachel plays the flute and Chelsea is a percussionist. Participation in the Honors Band is limited to the highest-rated high school performers from across North America.
Rachel and Chelsea auditioned this fall for the Honors Performance Series and were accepted after a review by the Selection Board committee. Acceptance to the elite group is a direct result of the talent, dedication, and achievements demonstrated in their application and audition recording. Nominations for this year’s series came from 48 states, three Canadian provinces, South Korea, and Taiwan. Out of the 6000 nominees, 200 were selected for choir and 100 were selected for instrumental. They will join other performers for a special performance in the world-famous Carnegie Hall, a venue that marks the pinnacle of musical achievement.
Chelsea is the daughter of Dennie and Edna Wagner. Rachel is the daughter of Stan and Carrie Walker and studies flute with Aimee Sanchez. Both girls are a part of the La Vernia High School Mighty Bear Band under the direction of Stacy Clark, Kelsey Lien, and Kyle Fry.
Finalists will come together for five days in February in New York City to have the opportunity to learn from Jeffrey Grogan, work with other finalists, and get a taste of New York City. The Saturday, Feb. 19, evening performance is available to the public and specially invited representatives from collegiate music programs.
The Honors Performance Series was created to showcase accomplished individual high school performers by allowing them to study under master conductors and perform in the celebrated venue, Carnegie Hall.
