Jaguars knock off Beeville, fall to Lady Titans in Victoria
FLORESVILLE -- As the 2010-11 high school basketball season nears its end, the Floresville Jaguars find themselves struggling at a time the team would prefer to be peaking.
Last week, the Jags started things off right, as they handed the Lady Trojans of Beeville a 73-58 loss Feb. 1. After moving their Feb. 4 game with Victoria East to Feb. 5 because of weather concerns, though, the Jaguars were unable to keep the momentum going as they dropped the game, 62-51.
Against Beeville, the Hoop Troop started well, and held a 6-0 lead just minutes into the game. The Lady Trojans managed to string a few points together, but couldn’t keep pace with Floresville as the Jags took an 18-10 lead after the first period.
Floresville opened the second period of play with a 9-point run, and had Beeville feeling the heat, as the Lady Trojans trailed 27-10. Floresville allowed Beeville to keep pace with it from there, and the lead remained strong for the Jaguars at the half, 35-19.
The second half was more of the same for Floresville, as the Jaguars were never really threatened in the contest. The Hoop Troop held a 55-39 lead at the end of the third stanza, and then went on to seal the victory by the final score of 73-58.
Erica Hernandez led the way for Floresville with 23 points, followed by Brittany Aikens with 17 points, and Shelby Leinneweber with 8.
The Jaguars traveled to Victoria Feb. 5, and were hoping to continue their winning ways against the East Titans. Floresville started well in the first period, scoring the first 2 points of the game, and led by as many as 5 points. Victoria East battled back, though, and led 13-12 over Floresville after one period.
The Titans continued to build momentum in the second period, and took a 5-point lead for themselves. Floresville came back to tie the game at 17-all, but trailed 26-22 at the break.
Victoria scored the first 2 points of the second half, and extended its lead to 8. The Hoop Troop roared back, though, and regained the lead at 31-30, thanks largely to the scoring of Leinneweber and Hernandez. A pair of free throws by Caitlin Gillum gave Floresville a 3-point lead, but it would be the Jaguars’ last of the game.
The Titans began their comeback slowly in the closing minutes of the third stanza, and led 39-35 at the end of three. Victoria continued its scoring ways in the fourth, and soon had a 9-point lead. Katie Moore had a good effort in the final stanza to keep Floresville close, and the team shot well from the charity stripe, but it was not to be on this night. Victoria continued to pressure the Jags, and eventually locked up the win, 62-51.
Hernandez led the Jags in their loss with 24 points, followed by Moore with 10, and Leinneweber with 6.
The Jaguars were scheduled to play their final regular-season game Feb. 8, and will then begin preparing for the postseason. Victoria West has locked up the district title, and the Jags will sort things out with Victoria East and Gregory-Portland to determine who enters the playoffs as which numbered seed.
