LA VERNIA -- With both the high school boys and girls varsity basketball seasons drawing to an end, the Bears and Lady Bears were hoping to make up a little ground against Sam Houston last week. The Lady Bears traveled to San Antonio to take on the Lady Hurricanes Feb. 1, while the Bears stayed home to host the team from Sam Houston.

In San Antonio, the Lady Bears had their hands full with Sam Houston. La Vernia fought hard and made a good run from behind at the end, but dropped a heartbreaker to the Lady Hurricanes, 42-41.

Sam Houston held the early advantage over La Vernia, and took a 10-4 lead into the second period. The Lady Bears matched play with Sam Houston in the second period, but were unable to close the distance, and went into halftime trailing 20-13.

In the third period, however, the Lady Bears played with a renewed spirit and pulled themselves right back into the game. La Vernia outscored Sam Houston 19-15 in the period, and went into the final period trailing 35-32.

In the final period of the game, the Lady Bears not only closed the gap, but also took the lead away from Sam Houston. Unfortunately, the Lady Hurricanes retook the lead with 12 seconds remaining on the clock, and sealed the 1-point victory. Kayla Joshlin led the Lady Bears in scoring with 13 points, followed by Kayla Markgraf and Natalie Baker with 12 points each.

“It was another disappointing loss,” said Lady Bear Head Coach Ron Glazener Jr. “This team has a never-say-die attitude, which is very rewarding to see as a coach. We have made such tremendous improvement this season, so it is especially frustrating to have competed as hard as we have and not end up in the win column. I do know that we will continue to give a great effort and hopefully we can finish district play with a win at Gonzales.”

Back in La Vernia, the Bear varsity team was dealing with its own Hurricane-related problems, and eventually fell to the team from Sam Houston, 60-49.

The Hurricanes outpaced the Bears during the first period, and held a comfortable 20-12 lead after just one period. Sam Houston outscored the Bears again in the second, this time 16-10, and took a 36-22 lead into the break.

Following halftime, the lead was slightly extended in the third period by the Hurricanes, as Sam Houston once again outscored La Vernia. With a 49-32 lead and just eight minutes left to play, it was all but over for the Bears.

Still, the Bears never give up and won’t ever roll over for an opponent. The team showed this trait once again last Tuesday, as they fought back to score 17 points in the final period, while holding Sam Houston to 11. The Bears were unable to complete the comeback, but got within reach at 60-49.

Preston Stuart was the Bears’ leading scorer of the game with 12 points, followed by Cody Dacy with 10, and Kenny Moehrig with 8 points. Raustin Harris and Thomas Burris each scored 6 points, and Aaron Grubb added another 5.
