Jean Deason signs with Texas A&M Aggies
Jean Deason, a resident of Stockdale and student at St. Anthony Catholic High School in San Antonio, signs her letter of intent to attend school and compete in track and field for Texas A&M University in College Station. Deason is joined by (back, from left) Coach John Gonzales; her grandfather, Ben Deason; Athletic Director Roy Salas; her father, Wayne; (front) her grandmother, Helen Deason; and her mother, Paige.
After wrapping up a brilliant track and field career at St. Anthony Catholic High School in San Antonio this year, Jean Deason of Stockdale will make the transition from high school to college athletics, as she joins the Texas A&M University Aggie track and field team.
“I’m very excited,” Deason said. “It’s a great opportunity for me.”
Deason has been a standout athlete at St. Anthony, where she has competed in a variety of different track and field events over the years. She even qualified for the state meet in five different events last year, and has excelled at nearly everything she has attempted. In making the move to college, though, Deason knows her role will be a little different.
“All I know right now is that I will be throwing the javelin,” Deason said, “but other than that, I’m not sure.”
There were several schools courting Deason, and it was the University of Oregon that had her attention, but what seemed like a done deal was drastically altered when she received a phone call from Aggie Head Coach Pat Henry.
“When Coach Henry called me, everything changed,” Deason said. “Honestly, I didn’t think I could make the team at A&M, but Coach Henry said he wanted me there.”
Once the offer was extended, it didn’t take long for Deason to agree. She now says she is looking forward to attending A&M for a number of reasons, but mainly because she knows the Aggies have one of the best track and field programs in the nation. She knows this decision will help her reach her goals and possibly live her dreams.
“Everyone there has done so well,” she said of the Aggie program. “The coaches and athletes really have what it takes. National titles, Olympics, everyone has been so successful.”
Deason dreams of the Olympics, competing professionally, and even about signing a contract with Nike some day. She has a lot of work ahead of her, but if her high school career is to be any indication, Deason is well on her way.
She said she will miss her family when she moves up to College Station, but said her brother and sister currently attend Texas A&M, and that she has been to the school many times before.
“I already feel like A&M is home,” Deason said. “I will miss my parents, but I know they will come and visit me.”
Deason plans to major in kinesiology -- and since, next to lunch, anatomy is her favorite class of the day -- this should be a good fit. She said she enjoys learning about the body, and specifically about how muscles function.
With her senior track and field season still to come, Deason is careful not to look too far ahead. She still has a number of goals for this year -- one of which is to qualify for the state meet in five different field events.
The state meets are always a special time, and last year’s meet will always serve as a highlight to Deason.
“I was competing in both the pole vault and long jump, and they were going on at the same time,” she recalled. “I remember that right after I did the pole vault, I had to run over to the long jump. I jumped without any warm-ups and finished second. Then, I had to run back to the pole vault. I was able to finish second there, too.”
With talent and determination like that, it’s easy to see why Texas A&M wants Deason to wear the Aggie uniform. And with the support of a great team and program, there is no telling how far Deason will go.
