Eddie Lopez bound for Texas A&M-Kingsville
East Central quarterback Eddie Lopez signs his letter of intent to attend school and play football for the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas. Lopez is joined by his mother, Melissa Hernandez; father, Eddie Lopez; (back, left) Head Coach Robert Walker, and Coach Ronnie Perez.
Over the past couple of years, the East Central Hornet football team has had one of the most capable quarterbacks in the area. Jagger “Eddie” Lopez got things done for the black and gold, and helped lead the Hornets to a district title in 2010. Now, the talented quarterback will get his opportunity to compete at the “next level,” having signed his letter of intent to Texas A&M University-Kingsville Feb. 2.
“I am excited about the opportunity,” Lopez said. “I’m looking forward to playing football at the next level and to earning a degree.”
Lopez said he isn’t sure what that degree will be, but he isn’t too concerned right now.
“I’m not really worried about that right now,” he said. “I know I have some time to figure it out.”
Making the move from high school to college is a big one, and Lopez is ready for the challenge. But like most, he knows he will miss what he is leaving behind. He will miss his family, friends, and, of course, playing football at East Central.
“I will miss playing here,” he said. “I’ll miss my teammates and my coaches at East Central.”
For Lopez, his fondest memory from high school will always be helping the Hornets capture the District 28-5A title in 2010.
“That meant a lot to us,” he said. “It was really important to our senior class.”
Lopez’s mother, Melissa Hernandez, said that while the distance from San Antonio to Kingsville will “be hard” to deal with, she is proud of her son, and will do whatever it takes to be at his games.
“I’m just so proud of him,” she said. “This is such a big accomplishment for Eddie -- and our family.”
Lopez’s father, Eddie, echoed the sentiment.
“This is a very exciting day,” the elder Eddie said. “This is due to a lot of hard work and commitment. All of his hard work and effort has just paid off.
“I’m also thankful to the coaches that helped Eddie accomplish this goal,” he added. “Without a good program and good leadership, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Lopez is a special young man, and he carries himself well. Even on National Signing Day, when all of the light was directed onto Lopez, he remained humble about his accomplishments, and the path that began when he first took the field at the age of 5 years.
“I need to thank my family for all their support,” Lopez said. “My dad was always pushing me to work hard and my mom has always supported me. My stepmom always encouraged me, and my stepdad has always been there for me.”
“I’m very excited for him and his family,” said East Central Head Coach Robert Walker. “He is a good football player and a good young man. He will do well.”
