School prepares to crown Valentine royalty
Students at Sacred Heart School in Floresville are preparing to crown this year’s Valentine King and Queen, a decades-old tradition at the only Catholic school in Wilson County.
The coronation will take place Saturday, Feb. 12.
Meet the students who will represent the school by participating in the Floresville Peanut Festival Parade and other area events throughout the coming year.
Gabriella Marroquin will be the new Valentine Queen. She was born Sept. 11, 2002, in San Antonio. Her parents are Anne Moralez and Richard Marroquin Jr., both of Floresville.
She is the granddaughter of Mary Helen and Richard Marroquin Sr. and John R. and Mary Helen Moralez, all of Floresville.
Gabriella has attended Sacred Heart School since 2007; she is in the second grade, taught by Erica Chavez. She enjoys and loves all of her teachers and misses her teachers and friends during the long school breaks, and is eager to return to school.
Her favorite subject is science and she has expressed an interest in becoming a veterinarian.
Gabriella is very active in sports. She plays soccer, volleyball, and basketball with St. Ann’s CYO in La Vernia. She will play Little League softball in Floresville this year. Gabriella always does her best when participating in sports, whether practicing or playing. Her coaches praise her for learning new skills quickly.
Other than sports, her favorite pastimes include reading and playing with her DSi and Wii games.
Gabriella is a member of the St. Ann Catholic Church youth choir in La Vernia.
Awaiting the crown of Valentine King this year is Daniel Lawrence Flores.
Daniel is the 8-year-old son of Gilbert and Lia Flores of Floresville. His grandparents are Henry and Julia Castro and Gaspar and Betty Flores, all of Floresville.
As a second-grader, Daniel is now in his fifth year at Sacred Heart. He is following in the footsteps of his mom and grandfather, part of the third generation of his family to attend Sacred Heart School. Daniel’s entire family is committed to supporting the school, and they all have a strong desire to ensure its continued success.
Daniel is an active student and has demonstrated a commendable level of academic success. His favorite subject is spelling.
He is preparing anxiously to receive his First Holy Communion this spring.
Daniel enjoys playing basketball with the Spurs League and soccer with the Wilson County Soccer League. When not participating in extracurricular activities, he enjoys spending time with his siblings, Rebecca, Lori, and Joshua. Daniel also enjoys playing with his Bey Blades and listening to music.
Daniel is looking forward to representing Sacred Heart School as king of the Valentine Court. He is very thankful to everyone who has helped support his fund-raising efforts.
