Violet “Vi” (Dickey) Baker passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, in the Country Care Manor nursing home in La Vernia,Texas.

She was born March 20, 1917, in Dennison to William and Eliza Dickey.

Vi, a member of the Catholic faith, had worked in retail and had an antiques business before retiring. During World War II, she was a “Rosie the Riveter,” working in the aircraft industry.

She was formerly of Dallas and Karnack, ultimately moving to La Vernia for health reasons. Vi loved to read, quilt, and refinish old furniture. She was very handy, according to her surviving daughter, Elaine.

Vi was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John K. Baker; a daughter, Linda Baker; and her sisters, Melba Herrington, Wanda Gathers, Rosemary Brolliar, and Billie Hamblin.

She is survived by a daughter, Elaine Kosub and husband Kenneth of San Antonio; a son, John Baker and wife Irena of Corpus Christi; a grandson, Christopher Nichols; a granddaughter, Stephanie Kosub; and many nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be recited on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Elmendorf, followed by a funeral Mass in the church.

Her ashes will be dispersed at a private location -- “somewhere pretty,” per her request -- at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 7400 Louis Pasteur Drive No. 200, San Antonio, TX 78229-4542; or
