GONZALES -- After a disappointing 51-48 overtime loss to the Lady Apaches of Gonzales, the season has come to an end for the La Vernia High School Lady Bear basketball team.

The teams played a tight first period and ended the first stanza tied at 11-all. La Vernia turned up the heat during the second period of play, though, and held a slight 19-17 lead at the break.

Following halftime, La Vernia had another great period of play in the third, and extended its lead to 37-29 after three. It was all Gonzales in the final period, though, with the Lady Apaches fighting back to take the lead late in the game. La Vernia’s Kristine Key had to hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. During the overtime period, however, the Lady Bears were unable to hang on to a narrow lead, and fell to Gonzales, 51-48.

With the loss, La Vernia finished in a fourth-place tie in the district with Gonzales, sporting a 6-6 district record, and a 13-17 overall season record.

Lady Bear Head Coach Ron Glazener Jr. was disappointed with the loss, but said he was extremely proud of the Lady Bears’ effort.

“We had our opportunities to garner a win, but we just couldn’t finish it out,” Glazener said. “I’m disappointed for our team, and especially our seniors, because we made tremendous strides as a team this year.

“We gained a tremendous amount of experience this season and look to contend for a playoff spot next year with a solid nucleus of returning players,” Glazener added. “Thanks to our fans and community who were very supportive of our efforts this year. We appreciate everything you have done for us.”
