The Floresville Tigers won both of their District 30-4A games last week to clinch their third straight playoff appearance. The Tigers improved their district record to six wins and three losses with the two wins.
In their home game on Feb. 8 against Port Lavaca, the Tigers came away with a 59-47 victory over the Sandcrabs to avenge an earlier loss this season. The two teams played a close first half as the Tigers held a 14-10 lead after one quarter and a 23-19 lead at the half. At the end of the third quarter, the Tigers had a 36-29 advantage and outscored the Sandcrabs 23-18 in the final period for the 12-point victory.
Jacob Flores got the scoring started for the Tigers as he had 8 points in the first quarter, which also included two 2-point baskets. Rob Regalado made two 3-point shots in the third quarter and made good on 11 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to pace the Tigers.
Regalado was the high scorer for the Tigers with 17 points, while Estevan Mendiola had 15, Flores scored 12, Colton Wallace put in 8, Josh Barnard had 4, and Richie Asebedo scored 3. Regalado, Flores, and Mendiola each made two 3-point baskets and Asebedo made one.
The Tigers played their final home game of the season on Friday evening as they defeated the Gregory-Portland Wildcats by a score of 73-67. The two teams played another close contest as the Tigers held a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter and had a 36-30 advantage at the half. The Tigers built the lead to 55-45 after three quarters; however, the Wildcats kept it close with their 3-point shots in the final period.
Regalado got the Tigers started with 10 points in the first quarter, which included two 3-point baskets. Mendiola made three 3-point shots in the third quarter for nine points, while Barnard was clutch on the free throw line as he went 6 for 6 in the fourth quarter.
Mendiola led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points, followed by Regalado with 16; Barnard, 9; Flores, 8; Charlie Albert, 7; Wallace, 6; and Dominique DeWalt, 6.
The Tigers connected on 13 3-point shots in the game as Mendiola made 6, Regalado and Flores each had 2, and Barnard, Albert, and DeWalt each had 1.
Going into their final game of the season against Victoria West Feb. 15, the Tigers were in a three-way tie for second place with Port Lavaca and West. All three teams were just one game behind district leader Victoria East. Depending on the outcome of their last game, the Tigers could possibly have a district playoff game late this week; however, their bi-district playoff game will be played early next week against one of the San Antonio Independent School District schools at a site and time to be determined.
