The Hornet and Lady Hornet soccer teams hosted a tournament Jan. 27-29, and both teams played well, though each came up a little short in the end. Both the boys and girls Hornet soccer teams played in the championship games, but neither could overcome their opponents.

On the first day of competition, the Lady Hornets got things started with a win over Edison. The teams were tied at 1-1 after regulation, but the Lady Hornets prevailed with a shootout victory. Floresville and Seguin then took the field, and the Jaguars picked up the 2-0 win.

In boys competition, the Hornets began their tournament play with a 4-0 win over Floresville. Johnson High School then beat Jefferson 1-0, and Memorial knocked off Burbank 2-0.

The girls from Wagner topped Burbank 1-0 to start play on day two, and Roosevelt beat Odessa by the score of 2-0. Edison handed Seguin its second loss of the tournament by the score of 3-1, and Odessa did the same to Burbank with its 4-0 win. East Central and Floresville closed out the day, and it was the Lady Hornets picking up the 2-0 victory.

The Hornet junior varsity team started things off for the boys with a 2-1 win over Alice, and Jefferson knocked off the Floresville Tigers, 5-0. Burbank topped Alice 4-0, the Hornet varsity team topped Johnson 2-1, and Memorial defeated the East Central junior varsity squad 2-0.

The final day of competition began as the girls from Roosevelt knocked off the team from Wagner, 2-0. Burbank then beat Seguin 4-0 for its first win of the tournament, and Wagner rebounded from its earlier loss to defeat the Floresville Jaguars 2-1.

With pool play out of the way, the finals were set. Odessa faced Edison in the consolation game, and East Central and Roosevelt met for the championship.

Odessa dominated the Lady Eagles of Edison in the consolation game, and handed them a 3-0 defeat. The title game was much closer, however, and it was the Lady Rough Riders of Roosevelt who rode out of town with a 1-0 win and the tournament title.

The boys concluded their play as Alice topped Floresville 3-1, and Johnson pounded the Hornet junior varsity squad 6-0. Jefferson and Burbank were set to square off for consolation, and Memorial and East Central were set to meet for the championship.

Jefferson had no trouble with Burbank in capturing the consolation trophy, and Memorial made things look easy against the Hornets as it rolled to a 5-0 win for the title.
