He grew up in the Alum community, attended the Alum school, and then graduated from Stockdale High School in 1930.

Ted served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, assigned to the USS Granville. He was proud to have served his country and was most proud of his Navy memorabilia.

He was a 60-year member of the Stockdale Masonic Lodge No. 470, serving as Past Master; was a former member of the Stockdale American Legion Post; and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Stockdale Chamber of Commerce. Ted also served on the board of directors of the Stockdale Housing Authority for more than 20 years, beginning in 1969 with the board’s inception. Ted was employed by the Mobil Oil Co. as a consignee. He served in this position for 25 years, retiring in 1978.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Calvin, Kelly Preston, Joe, Alton, Clyde, Gresham, and Lester; his sister, Floy (Mrs. Roy) Garner; and two beloved sons, Ronald Ray Akin and Ted Smith Akin.

He is survived by his loving wife of 76 years, Edith Smith Akin; his daughter, Judy Childress and husband Larry of Stockdale; five grandchildren, Ted Brent Akin and wife Judy Lynn of Stockdale, Brad Akin and wife Leslie of Seguin, Lance Childress and wife Jennifer of San Antonio, Larianne Hastings and husband David of Coppell, and Luke Childress of Austin; seven great-grandchildren, Stephenae, Ted Dawson, Matthew and Claire Akin, and Emma and Holden Childress; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 11, in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Stockdale from 1-8 p.m. The family received friends from 5-8 p.m.

The funeral service was held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Stockdale with the Rev. Maurice Smith officiating, assisted by Brother Scott Jones.

Interment followed in at the Stockdale Cemetery.
