Herb Carroll of China Grove, Texas, entered into rest on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2011, at the age of 84. He was born Nov. 6, 1926, in Bexar County to Marie and Marion H. Carroll.
Herb was known for his very big heart and his love for people as reflected by a host of friends throughout Texas and the United States. As the owner of Herb’s Hat Shop for the past 30 years, he had become known as Mr. Hat Man. He opened up his hat shop after his retirement following 27 years with Southwestern Bell.
Herb and his beloved wife of 32 years, Pat, shared their love of people and were partners in many civic and service groups and active members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. Herb was the charter president of the China Grove Area Lions Club, serving in all offices since 1982. He also served the Lions in many other capacities as zone and region chairman and in district cabinet offices. Herb’s great thrill was to present one of his custom hats to Lions Clubs International President Jimmy Ross, the 89th president of Lions Clubs International. Herb also provided hats to Lions in China, India, Africa, and Iceland.
Herb was involved with the Cowboy Breakfast Foundation and was made honorary chairman. He also was a Life Member of the San Antonio Livestock Association and served on the Calf Scramble and Exhibit committees for many years.
Herb served as a city councilman for China Grove for many years.
Herb and Pat truly loved serving others through their love for the Texas Lions Camp and seeing the handicapped, diabetic, and Down syndrome children spend a week free of charge at the beautiful Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. The Lions of Texas pay expenses for children to have the time of their lives to experience the “Can Do” spirit. Herb was a Century Club member of the Camp.
Herb leaves behind his beloved family whom he loved so dearly; he always said he was a happy man. Cherishing his memory are his wife, Pat; daughters Kathy Hecox and husband Glen of Weatherford, Beth Zwicke and husband Dennis of Marion, and Kellye Harris; his sons, Bradley Carroll and wife Annette of San Antonio, Wesley Carroll of San Antonio, and Toby Fest; his grandchildren, Ryan Hecox and wife Leslie and son Kyle, Ross Hecox and wife Amye, Ragan Hecox, Brent Reininger and wife Dana, Justin Reininger and wife Nicole and twins, Hilary Reininger, Tyler Reininger, Zack and Zane Carroll, Tori Carroll and Weston Carroll, Gary Fowler, Nicole Anderson, and Jordan Grenadier; great-grandchildren Brooke and Reide Reininger and twins Kylie and Kelsie Reininger; and his mother-in-law, Robbie Tadlock.
Visitation was held Friday, Feb. 11, from 5-7 p.m. in the Porter Loring Funeral Home in San Antonio.
A funeral service took place Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in San Antonio.
Burial was in the Hill Country Memorial in Bulverde. Following the burial, a reception took place in the Mesquite Hall in Adkins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Texas Lions Camp, P. O. Box 290247, Kerrville, TX 78029; St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2302 South Presa St., San Antonio, TX 78210; or the China Grove Area Lions Club, P. O. Box 146, Adkins, TX 78101.
