The Floresville Tigers traveled to Victoria last Tuesday evening for their final regular season game against the West Warriors. In the low-scoring contest, the Tigers pulled out a 36-29 victory to end district play tied for second place along with Port Lavaca with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. The two teams decided to flip for the playoff position with the Tigers entering as the third-place seed.
Although the game was close throughout, the Tigers outscored the Warriors in each quarter. The Tigers held a narrow 10-9 lead after the first quarter as Jacob Flores and Estevan Mendiola each scored 5 points in the period. In the second quarter, the Tigers scored 7 points to take a 17-13 lead at the half. Mendiola made a 3-point basket in the period, while Rob Regalado and Dominique De Walt each scored two points.
The slow-down tactics continued in the third quarter, as a 3-point shot by Flores was the only score for the Tigers, while the defense limited the Warriors to only 2 points. The Tigers held a 20-15 lead to start the final period. The scoring heated up in the fourth quarter, though, as the Tigers outscored the Warriors 16-14 to take the 7-point victory. Regalado played strong in the period as he scored 9 points, including 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Colton Wallace came up with 4 big points in the quarter and Richie Asebedo made good on 3 of 4 free throws.
Following the exciting victory, the Tigers claimed their third straight playoff appearance and faced the Edison Bears in the Bi-District round on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at South San. The winner of that contest will meet the winner of the Alice vs. Roma contest in an area playoff game later this week.
