BEEVILLE -- With a big double-digit win over Bishop, the Poth Pirette basketball team has added yet another area championship to its long list of accolades, and has earned another trip into the regional quarterfinals.

Poth, currently ranked No. 8 among all Class 2A teams in Texas, traveled to Beeville Feb. 18 to take on the Bishop Lady Badgers in the second round of the playoffs. Poth took a commanding lead in the first period and never looked back, handing Bishop a 74-53 defeat.

The Pirettes scored an impressive 25 points against Bishop in the first period of play, while holding the Lady Badgers to just 10 points in the first stanza. Poth backed up its first-period performance with another 19 points in the second, while Bishop tacked on 15, making the score 44-25 at the break.

The scoring slowed considerably in the third period, though, as the Pirettes scored just 11 points, and the Lady Badgers dropped in 10.

Leading 55-35, the Pirettes were on cruise control in the fourth, but still outpaced the Lady Badgers with 19 points, compared to 18 by Bishop. As the final buzzer sounded, it was Poth with the big win, 74-53.

Tara Dunn led the way for the Pirettes with 14 points, followed by Tara Broyles with 12, Micah Weaver with 11, and Ashley Fuller with 10 points.

With the win, the Pirettes advanced to the regional quarterfinals where they were scheduled to face Kingsville Academy Feb. 22 in Beeville.
