Edward Elijah “Sonny” Smith passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born Jan. 28, 1924, the youngest of 10 children.

Edward was a World War II veteran, having served on the USS Enterprise. He made his mark in several states as a much-sought-after horse show judge. His wit and storytelling brought joy to many. A recent trip to the World War II museum in Washington, D.C., with the Alamo Honor Flight gave him an opportunity to share war experiences with others having been through similar events and endeared him to many new and wonderful friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah E. and Harriet Caroline (Williams) Smith; his siblings; his wife, Louise (Puyper) Smith; and infant son Carl Edward Smith. Edward is survived by his wife, Alice Marie (Vogel) Smith; his daughters and sons-in-law, Zee and Darrell McBride and Robin and Jimmy Wheeler; his stepchildren, Vanessa Leibham and David “Bubba” Lytle; his grandchildren, Tommy, Tammy, TJ, Sharon McBride, Chance Wheeler, and Mason Leibham; his great-grandchildren, Courtney, Caitlyn, Cole, and Chloe McBride; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many wonderful friends.

A visitation was held on Sunday, Feb. 20, from 5-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia.

A funeral service was held on Sunday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Chaplain Daniel M. Hubbell officiating.

Additional funeral services will be held in Picayune, Miss., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Alamo Honor Flight, 8807 Braun Valley, San Antonio, TX 78254.
