The old jobs are dead. Long live the new jobs. Paint your roofs white, put more air in your tires, and drive the speed limit. Eat only approved healthy foods, don’t drink or smoke, only attend government-approved schools with government-approved teachers, and “share the wealth.”
Force the cost of energy and fuel up so high that alternative methods are our only choice. No, wait. There will be no choice if we are forced, against our will and good sense, to use only light bulbs that don’t work and to drive cars that we don’t want to drive, or not to drive at all and forced to take light rail.
When Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke announced in January that unemployment rates would take several years to get back to “normal,” several states announced that alternative energy jobs were “soaring.” But, at what cost?
Some people really believe that the country’s future hinges on the development of alternative energy technology. But the truth is that today there are millions of manufacturing jobs that have been displaced and sent to foreign countries because of our inefficiency and restrictive government regulations. They claim that our dependence on fossil fuels continues to make Americans “slaves to foreign oil.” That, however, is only because the current administration insists that we cannot drill and cannot develop and use our own vast resources. We are being forced into an unnatural alternative energy industry.
Any “explosion of new jobs” is only as a result of taxing some industries to pay for new industry. Some of this "new" technology includes railroads and vast fields of windmills. This hardly sounds like new technology. We all know that railroads are long past their prime, and windmills have been around for centuries. They mar the landscape just as do railroad tracks and the vast acres of beautiful stainless steel solar panels. Where are the environmentalists? They believe in only preserving the pristine countryside in Alaska, and be damned with the Texas landscape.
While there’s nothing wrong with wind and solar, we are smothering progress by refusing to develop those God-given natural resources that have made this country so rich and prosperous. And, by rich and prosperous, I don’t mean just material wealth. At one time, we were a nation of strength, both moral and physical, and today we are weak-kneed when it comes to making decisions and taking care of ourselves. We want to turn to someone else to do it, and usually, it’s the government.
This is not good for our national health and the survival of a free America. |
