The Floresville Tigers’ 2010-11 basketball season came to an end last Tuesday evening in the Durbon Center in San Antonio, as they fell to the Edison Golden Bears 57-40 in their Class 4-A bi-district contest. With the loss, the Tigers finished their season with a record of 23 wins and 12 losses.

The first quarter found the Tigers falling behind midway through the period and they could not recover. Baskets by Dominique DeWalt and Colton Wallace had the two teams tied at 4-4 before Edison scored the next 14 points to take an 18-14 lead at the end of the period.

The Tigers tried to battle back in the second quarter as Wallace came up with 10 of the 12 points scored to trail 27-16 at the half. DeWalt had the only other 2 points in the period.

The Tigers made a move in the third quarter as they got within 4 points on a Jacob Flores basket at 33-29 with about two minutes left in the period. Estevan Mendiola scored 7 points in the quarter, including a 3-point shot, while DeWalt and Wallace each added 2 more points to help close the gap. Once again, however, the Golden Bears scored the final 6 points of the quarter as they took a 39-29 lead going into the final period.

Flores scored the first 2 points in the fourth quarter to get the Tigers within 8 points, but that was the closest the score would be for the remainder of the evening. Wallace came up with 4 more points in the period, while Flores made a 3-point shot and Rob Regalado made a basket to round out the Tiger scoring.

The Tigers should be congratulated on a great season as they tied for second place in District 30-4A with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses. The Tigers faced a number of playoff teams throughout the season and won the consolation championships at the Hondo, South San, and Calallen tournaments. The Tigers also qualified for their third-straight playoff appearance. The Tigers will certainly miss the four seniors next year who will graduate in June. These four young men include Rob Regalado, Amos Garcia, Richie Asebedo, and Colton Wallace.

Edison defeated Roma in the second round of play last Friday and will now face District 30-4A champion Victoria East. The contest between the Golden Bears and the Titans will take place this Wednesday, March 2, in the Floresville High School gym. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
