GERONIMO -- Despite having played a relatively short schedule this season, the Falls City Beaver basketball team looked good last Thursday evening as it knocked off Johnson City 48-32 in the area championship.

“It was a great defensive game by both teams,” said Beaver Head Coach Travis Ehrlich. “I’m very proud of my guys. We were up by 1 at the half, and played excellent defense in the second half.”

Because of Falls City’s state-title run in football, the team was late in making its transition from the gridiron to the hardwood. But the team has responded well, winning the District 31-1A title, and adding an area championship.

“That was only our 13th game,” Ehrlich said, “so we work to keep getting better every day.”

Luke Swierc and Tyler Wiatrek led the Beaver offense with 14 points each, followed by Matt Wiatrek with 12 points and Colin Dziuk with 8.

The Beavers will advance to the regional quarterfinals, where they will face Mason. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2.
