Pirates beat Banquete Bulldogs, advance to regional quarterfinals
GOLIAD -- After knocking off the Banquete Bulldogs 71-57 last Friday evening, the Poth Pirate basketball team is now area champion.
The Pirates made a strong showing in the area title game, and took an early lead in the first quarter behind the 3-point shooting of Denver McKinney. The game was close, but after the first stanza, Poth led 15-12.
The game pace quickened a bit in the second period, and each team continued to match the other’s scoring efforts. When the buzzer signaled the end of the first half, each team had scored 16 points, though Poth led Banquete, 31-28.
Following halftime, Jacob Caloss got the Pirates rolling with a 3-pointer to extend the Poth lead. The Pirates picked things up on defense, and held the Bulldogs to 14 points, while adding another 17 of their own. By the end of the third, the Pirates led 48-42.
In the fourth period of play, the Pirates blew the game wide open. Billy Korzekwa dropped in 8 points for the Pirates, and McKinney added another 7. In total, Poth outscored Banquete 23-15 in the final period, and walked away with a solid 71-57 win.
McKinney led the Pirate scoring effort with 17 points, followed by Korzekwa with 15, and Josh Jaskinia with 12 points. Tommy Waclawczyk scored 9 points for Poth, Caloss was good for 7, Aaron Friesenhahn and Oscar Ramon each scored 4 points, and Jesse Dugi earned 3.
The 22-10 Pirates will now advance to the regional quarterfinals where they will face Santa Rosa. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, March 2.
