Jaguars’ season comes to end
CORPUS CHRISTI -- After a disappointing 71-67 loss to the Lady Titans of Victoria East Feb. 22, the season has officially ended for the Floresville Jaguar Hoop Troop basketball team. The Jags finished with an overall record of 28-7, while advancing to the regional quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
Floresville junior guard Erica Hernandez scored the first basket of the game to give the Jags a 2-0 lead, but East quickly tied things up. Katie Moore scored Floresville’s second basket, but the Jags were shut out from there, as Victoria East ended the first period of play with a 10-point run and a 12-4 lead at the buzzer.
The Lady Titans’ scoring ways continued into the second period of play, and Floresville soon found itself trailing 16-4. Senior guard Annielyn Felux added the Jaguars’ next 5 points from the charity stripe, and sophomore post Shelby Leinneweber dropped in a couple more free throws to make it a 19-11 game in favor of Victoria.
Four more free throws by Felux gave the Jags some points, but Victoria East began to pull away and led by as many as 13 points. Hernandez hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 10, and follow-up baskets from Amanda Montoya and Hernandez made it a 28-22 game in the closing minutes of the first half. When the buzzer signaled the end of the second period, it was Victoria East with a 9-point lead at 32-23.
Leinneweber scored the first basket of the second half, and freshman guard De Havalan Watts dropped in another shot to cut the Lady Titan lead to 5. Victoria East finally got rolling in the period, though, and soon found itself with another double-digit lead.
With the scoreboard reading 43-33, the Lady Titans went on a 9-point run. The scoring was halted when Hernandez went to the line for Floresville, and a pair of free throws made the score 52-35. Victoria added one final basket in the third, and Felux made another trip to the free-throw line, ending the third period with the score 54-37 in favor of Victoria East.
With only eight minutes remaining in the game, the Jags went back to the floor and gave it their best effort. Moore, Montoya, and Leinneweber each made trips to the free-throw line, as did Hernandez. Destiny Amaro sank a basket to bring the Jags back to within 10, and Jessica Castro sank a couple of free throws to keep them there.
With the Lady Titans back in front by 11, Moore hit a 3-pointer, and Leinneweber dropped in one from the line. Moore hit another shot for Floresville, and after yet another trip to the line, helped pull the Jags to within 5 points at 63-58.
Victoria East earned another point from the free-throw line itself, but Hernandez drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Jags within a basket at 64-61. It was a game of free throws from there, as both teams committed fouls and took their chances at the line, and it seemed things were paying off for the Jags as Moore sank one to make it a 68-67 game. But the Lady Titans still had a little left in the tank, and managed to squeak in a few more points, giving them the 71-67 win.
Hernandez led the Jaguars with 24 points, followed by Moore with 17, Felux with 11, and Leinneweber with 6. Montoya scored 3 points for Floresville, and Castro, Amaro, and Watts each added another 2.
