State Bound: Falls City
After knocking off Mason in the regional quarterfinals, the Falls City Beaverette basketball team competed in the Class 1A-Division I Region IV tournament this past weekend, and defeated both Thrall and Snook. The wins gave the Beaverettes the region title -- and perhaps more importantly -- the opportunity to compete for the state title.
In the regional semifinals, the Beaverettes defeated Thrall by the score of 55-31. Falls City began strong, outscoring Thrall 16-7 in the first period, and taking a 30-14 lead into the locker room at halftime. Each team scored 10 in the third period, but Falls City doubled up on Thrall in the fourth, outscoring it 15-7, and securing a 55-31 victory.
Chelsey Stolle led the way for Falls City with 19 points, followed by Kelsi Salziger with 15 points, and Jacy Gibson with another 10. Camari Crawford scored 5 points, Tiffany Dziuk scored 3, and Ashleigh Blocker tossed in another 2.
With another win to their credit, the Beaverettes returned to the hardwood Feb. 26, to face Snook in the finals. The game took two overtime periods to complete, but in the end, it was Falls City hoisting the Region IV title, as they defeated Snook, 56-47.
Falls City took a 16-11 lead into the second period of play, but by halftime, things were tied at 24-all. Falls City outperformed Snook in the third, scoring 11 points, while holding the Lady Blue Jays to just 3 points. In the fourth period, though, Snook fired back with 12 points, while holding Falls City to just 4, and forcing regulation play to end with the teams tied at 39-39.
Each team scored 4 points in the first overtime period, forcing the game to a second. The Beaverettes caught fire in double overtime though, outscoring Snook to give Falls City the 56-47 win.
Stolle led Falls City with 21 points, followed by Crawford and Salziger with 11 points apiece. Gibson scored 9, and Dziuk and Maggie Holz each scored another 2 points.
The 26-3 Beaverettes will now prepare for Martins Mill, as the two teams will square off in the state semifinals, Thursday, March 3, at 10 a.m. in the Frank Erwin Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.
