The La Vernia Intermediate Campus is following the orders of the nation’s commander in chief. President Barack Obama recently said the country needs to celebrate academics -- and students here have made sure there is something to celebrate!

The campus had a total of 192 try out for UIL academic competition, with 81 going on to compete in Somerset Feb. 12. The teams brought home 11 first-place medals, 11 seconds, six third places, 10 fourths, six fifth places, and four sixth places.

The parent-teacher organization provided snacks to ensure “starvation” wasn’t a distraction on the day.

Principal Scott Cales, during a Feb. 15 awards presentation, thanked Helen Hubert for coordinating this year’s UIL participation, as well as the teachers who coached the teams and the parents for their support.

Dr. Tom Harvey, district superintendent, congratulated the campus on its achievement.

“President Obama said we need to celebrate academics,” Harvey said. “And here we are!”
