Rufus Ernest Schnitz
Rufus Ernest Schnitz, 75, formerly of Leesville, Texas, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, in Navasota.
He was born Oct. 21, 1935, in Ecleto to Willie and Elsie (Stock) Schnitz. Rufus was baptized as a child in the Gillett area and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nixon. He grew up in the Ecleto area and went to school in Gillett and Karnes City, where he ran track for the Badgers.
He won the 100-yard dash in the state track meet with a time of 9.8 seconds, something that he was always proud of.
Rufus provided for his family by working in the oil field early in marriage and then he bought a water well drilling rig and drilled most of the water wells in the Nixon and Leesville areas. He was a true cowboy and loved to hunt and fish, and was known for the pranks that he would pull on people for a good laugh. He was a wonderful father and a friend to many.
Rufus was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, William and Elder Schnitz.
He is survived by his five children, Laura Gordon and husband Dale of Pandora, Nancy Everett and husband Michael of Converse, Susan Wilkerson and husband John Henry of Gonzales, Mary Jane Allen of Palestine, and Russell Schnitz of Gonzales. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Wesley Gordon, Justin Gordon, Jason Bertling, Jeremiah Bertling, Ryan Wilkerson, D’laine Wilkerson, Jasmine Allen, and Chelsie Allen; and four great-grandsons, Trenton Gordon, Jason Bertling, Jackson Bertling, and Jacob Bertling. He is also survived by his special friend, Sarah Bird of Navasota; his sister, Minnie Lee Grantham of Schertz; his former wife, Gay Hahn of Kenedy; and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation was held on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 5-7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.
The funeral service was held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Nixon with the Rev. Keith Michaelis and the Rev. Michael Cowey officiating.
Interment followed in the Nixon Cemetery in Nixon. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 403 N. Texas Ave., Nixon, TX 78140.
