Heaven’s grand symphony of radiance is shining brighter today as our firefly, Sarah Chidgey Hughes, has passed on in peace Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, in Houston, Texas, after 28 years of reflecting the light of Christ to so many in her community and around the world. Sarah was born in San Antonio on Oct. 19, 1982.

Sarah’s vibrant spirit has given wisdom and laughter to her Ecclesia Church community, her students at Meadow Wood Elementary, refugees from Burundi, Africa, and countless others who have journeyed with her.

Her journey over the past six months with cancer has been a source of continued hope and inspiration for many as reflected in her blog:

Sarah was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bill and Bea Chidgey.

She is loved and remembered by her parents, David and Denise Chidgey; sister Brooke Chidgey; her husband, Eric Hughes; and her grandparents, Johnny and Betty Pawelek. Sarah is also survived by aunts, uncles, and cousins Michelle and Lee Rogers, Skylar and Colton Moran, Steve and Pam Pawelek, Stephanie, Kyle, Sean, and Katie, Jillian and Steve Rountree, Chuck and Brenda Pawelek and Avery, Mary and Drew DiNovo, Jack and Beck, Henry and Mary Chidgey, Kaylan and Siva Tanuku, Marc and Linda, and Joe and Terri Chidgey, Kristi and Scott.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2:30 p.m. in the Ecclesia Church in Houston, with Pastor Chris Seay officiating.

A second memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 21, at 4 p.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio with the Rev. David Read officiating.

Private inurnment was held in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Columbarium in San Antonio.

Memorial donations may be made to the Spring Branch Education Foundation, 955 Campbell Road, Suite 206, Houston, TX 77024 or for the Sarah Chidgey Hughes Scholarship Fund; or to the “Shine Bright” Fund that has been established in Sarah’s memory at the Alamo Heights School Foundation to support and inspire teachers.

We are forever changed by Sarah’s life and love. Shine bright firefly, shine bright ... we cherish the path you illuminated.
