Lady Bear track team tops field

After recently placing fourth in a field of 34 teams at East Central, the Lady Bear track and field team followed up with another great performance at Medina Valley. La Vernia upset the defending Class 3A Region IV champ, Fredericksburg.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we’re off to a solid start,” said Head Track Coach Richard Hinojosa.

La Vernia finished first in the meet with 143 total points, followed by Fredericksburg with 131 points, and Medina Valley with 97. Finishing behind them were Hondo, Incarnate Word, Alamo Heights, St. Anthony’s, Bandera, Pleasanton, Somerset, and Devine.

The Bears and Lady Bears were scheduled to travel to Floresville March 5 to compete in the Jack Randall Relays.

Individual Results:

Field events:

High Jump: Valarie Moehrig- second place, 5 feet.

Long Jump: Natalie Baker- second place, 16 feet, 5.5 inches; Haley Bruner- third place, 15 feet, 10 inches.

Triple Jump: Amber Duelm- sixth place, 31 feet, 4.5 inches.

Pole Vault: Valerie Petry-third place, 9 feet, 0 inches.

Discus: Courtnie Ybarra-fourth place, 91 feet, 9 inches.

Track events:

3,200-meter run: Brianna Kruciak- third place, 12:21.34; Jessica Perry- fourth place, 12:22.24; Bailee Vrana- fifth place, 12:23.71.

1,600-meter run: Brianna Kruciak- third place, 5:50.90; Bailee Vrana- fifth place, 5:52.90.

800-meter run: Xanthe Harston- fourth place, 2:30.93.

400-meter dash: Xanthe Harston- second place, 1:03.59.

200-meter dash: Haley Bruner- first place, 26.84.

100-meter dash: Brittani Dear- second place, 12.50.

100-meter hurdles: Natalie Baker- first place, 15.84.

300-meter hurdles: Natalie Baker- first place, 46.27; Shayler Ring- fifth place, 49.50.

4x100-meter relay: Amy Gastauer, Haley Bruner, Brittani Dear, Madi Townes- fifth place, 52.58.

4x200-meter relay: Gastauer, Bruner, Dear, Mollie Wildenstein- second place, 1:51.31.

4x400-meter relay: Gastauer, Harston, Gessica Huber, Baker- second place, 4:12.21.
