History fair success
On Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26, several junior high and high school students competed in this year’s San Antonio Regional History Day Fair at Judson High School.
The competition begins in September with students choosing topics that must fit a specific theme. This year’s theme was “Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, and Consequences.” After researching their topics, students decide which category to enter and begin to assemble their presentations. With the guidance of their teachers, they document their work through an annotated bibliography and a process paper. It is a long-term learning event. Skills used in college and business careers are used in this research process.
This year’s students fared well in the regional competition. Six high school projects and 15 junior high projects competed, and nine of these projects made it to finals out of 657 entries.
High school students who placed in their event are Alexandria Beck and Arthor Ramon, third-place group exhibit. Junior high school students are Tyler Reinhard, sixth-place individual website; Hannah Jarzambek, sixth-place paper; Natalee Ford, fifth-place individual performance; and Kollin Fitch, fourth-place individual exhibit and honorable mention state qualifier.
State qualifiers are Miranda Hanzal, Kaylie Lowak, and Alex Morales, second-place group exhibit; Claire Weber, second-place individual website; and David Garza and Mark Robertson, first-place group documentary.
State qualifiers will compete in Austin on May 6-7 at the Bob Bullock Museum.
