Using the sites of Washington, D.C., as a living classroom, the Close-Up Foundation transcends the physical boundaries that schools with walls face as students get a “close up” experience with democracy in action. Floresville High School junior Juanita Mermea has been selected to attend this year’s leadership academy.

Students will spend six days visiting the nation’s monuments and make personal connections to the historic places, events, and people these memorials represent.

More than 500,000 students from all 50 states have met the program’s rigors and gone on to play key roles as leaders and ordinary citizens in the U.S. democracy.

This year, the Education Service Center, Region 20 in San Antonio will sponsor 30 students for the trip, scheduled June 5-10. All expenses will be paid for Juanita’s trip, including professional attire for the day she will meet with U.S. representatives and congressmen, as part of a shared-services arrangement with the Education Service Center.
