Stephen Svacina, executive director for the Wilson County U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency (FSA), announced Feb. 2 that the Conservation Reserve Program signup will begin Monday, March 14, and continue through Friday, April 15. This is the second consecutive year that the Ag Department has offered a general Conservation Reserve Program signup.

Landowners enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish long-term, resource-conserving covers on eligible farmland. Land that is not currently enrolled in a conservation program can be offered during signup if all eligibility requirements are met. Conservation Reserve Program participants with contracts expiring this fall can make new contract offers during the signup period. Contracts awarded during this general signup will become effective Oct. 1, 2011.

All Conservation Reserve Program offers are evaluated and ranked using an Environmental Benefits Index that indicates the environmental benefits of enrolling land in the program. There are five environmental factors that make up the Environmental Benefits Index: wildlife, water, soil, air, enduring benefits, and cost. Decisions will be made following the end of the signup period and after analyzing the environmental data on all of the offers.

In addition to the general signup, the continuous Conservation Reserve Program signup program will be ongoing.

For more information, call the Wilson County Farm Service Agency office at 830-393-3411 or visit http://www.fsa.usda.gov/crp.
