After months of preparation, feeding, watering, and tending to their animal projects, members of the La Vernia FFA and area 4-H clubs have exhibited their entries in the La Vernia Junior Livestock Show.

Serving as La Vernia ambassadors while promoting the ag industry, attendees saw more than 480 entries, ranging from market steers to breeding livestock and crafts to baked goods during the three-day event held Feb. 24-26 in La Vernia.

Kristen Klein and her steer entered the ring, competing against a field of 25, to garner the grand champion steer title. Andrew Stuart’s entry earned reserve champion honors.

Kortney Sells’ and Coby Mills’ showmanship skills were not overlooked by the judges, and the two were named junior and senior showmanship winners in the steer division. They and all the showmanship winners were recognized prior to the auction sale Feb. 26.

Leading the way with the 22 lamb entries were Bo Garcia winning grand champion and Emily Ramzinski, reserve champion, in this division.

Bo continued his winning streak by earning the junior lamb showmanship honors; Kayley Hyatt captured the senior level honors.

Competition was swift, with 93 swine entered in the market swine division. Jade Janek’s and Kaitlynn Snow’s entries earned these young producers an appearance in the auction ring with the grand and reserve champion entries, respectively.

Kaitlynn also earned the senior showmanship honors, joining Desirae Sodrok, who earned the honors on the junior level.

Valerie Swygard led the way in the goat competition, with her entry earning the top position of the 35 goats entered. Stacie Gibson received reserve champion honors.

Siblings Hunter and Jennifer Skrzycki earned the junior and senior showmanship titles in the goat division.

Feathers flew in the poultry division, with 48 turkeys and 35 broilers entered in the La Vernia show.

Jacob Grun earned grand champion turkey, and Christopher Herrera earned the grand champion title in the broilers competition.

Samantha Kravitz’s turkey entry and Meg Kravitz’s broiler entry were each named reserve champion.

Valerie Swygard’s pen of rabbits earned the grand champion title, while Kaylee Daniels exhibited the reserve champion pen.

Claire Weber earned the rabbit showmanship title in the junior division, while Zachary Balcar took senior division rabbit showmanship.

In the swine breeding champion rounds, Shaley Trammell won in the Duroc swine division and Kyler Puhlmann in the Yorkshire division.

In the reserve championship circle, swine exhibitors included Christin Thompson, cross; Megan Johnson, Duroc; Christopher Jacob, Hampshire; and Ashley Frederick, Yorkshire.

In the cattle division, Katy Sells walked away with the ABC champion title. Chesney Halsey took reserve ABC honors.

In the breeding heifer division, 15 females were entered, and siblings Lanham and Leighton Robbins earned the junior and senior showmanship titles, respectively.

Joey Tomlinson once again served as auctioneer for the sale, with auction sales totaling more than $247,000, not including add-ons for the livestock and poultry sale.

Baked foods, crafts

The artistic skills of exhibitors also were showcased during the three-day event in La Vernia.

Kaitlynn Snow continued her winning streak, earning overall grand champion honors with a drawing of her brother with a swine project.

The reserve champion title went to Kourtney Leija for a patchwork lap quilt.

Top baked foods honors include Haylee Coronado’s bar cookies, which earned best of show in the junior division, and Zachary Orrender’s iced cake entry, which led the senior division.

Complete results will be published in a future edition of The La Vernia News.
