FLORESVILLE -- A Floresville man is en route via AirLife helicopter to a San Antonio hospital following a dramatic police pursuit here that ended with the suspect being wounded.

Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Adrian Benavides. According to unconfirmed reports from law-enforcement officers at the scene, Benavides led police on an approximately 10-mile chase in and around Floresville before exiting his vehicle on Sixth Street. He was pursued by officers from the Floresville Police Department, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.

Once outside his vehicle, Benavides fled to a back yard, where he was shot by one of the pursuing officers at approximately 1 p.m. Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr. of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office said the name of the officer who fired the shot is not being released at this time.

The Texas Rangers are handling the investigation, which is ongoing.
