County extends burn ban

Continued dry weather conditions have prompted the Wilson County Commissioners Court to extend the county’s burn ban for another 90 days. As a result, certain restrictions on outdoor burning will continue until June 5.
County Judge Marvin Quinney and commissioners Albert Gamez Jr., Paul Pfeil, Ricky Morales, and Larry Wiley voted unanimously to continue the ban, accepting the recommendation of Edwin Baker, coordinator of the Wilson County Health and Public Safety Office. Baker was not present for the meeting.
Agricultural burning is allowable during a burn ban, but only with prior approval from the Health and Public Safety Office, which can be reached at 830-393-8503.
Household trash may be burned during daylight hours and in screened burn barrels, by those living in unincorporated areas where trash pickup services are unavailable.
Residents are reminded that violation of a county-enacted burn ban is considered a Class C misdemeanor, which is punishable by a $500 fine. Additionally, those responsible for fires that cause property damage can be held liable in a civil court.
Despite occasional rains, the mostly dry, windy weather and a heavy fuel load of dense, dry vegetation have created some tense moments for the area’s volunteer firefighters. As of March 14, Wilson County’s mean Keetch-Byram Drought Index number was 437.4511. Baker said that even if this number does not reach the range of 575 or higher, which usually triggers a burn ban declaration, the commissioners could extend the ban if they deem that disastrous conditions exist.
In other action, the commissioners voted unanimously on a resolution asking that the Texas House of Representatives leave the boundaries of House District 44 unchanged. |
