Sodexo and the Floresville Independent School District (FISD) cafeteria staff hosted its first-ever Future Chefs Contest on March 3.

Twenty-one fourth- and fifth-grade students from the north and south elementary schools entered the contest. The contestants arrived at 3:30 p.m. and started the evening with a snack and a safety talk.

They then donned their chef coats and hats and started cooking. At 5:30 p.m., display tables were set and the judges began sampling all the entries.

The judges were FISD school board Secretary Neysa Choate, FISD Deputy Superintendent Ken Barber, and Cliff Reece, Sodexo assistant manager for Texas and New Mexico and general manager for Waco ISD.

After the judging, all the students were awarded a medal, a certificate, and the 2011 Culinary Cookbook.

The grand-prize winners were recognized at the FISD board of trustees meeting on March 8. North Elementary fifth-grader Avery Heimer won Most Kid Friendly with her recipe “Ants on a Log.” North Elementary School fifth-grader Zachery Romero won Healthiest Recipe for his recipe “Salad con Carne.” North Elementary fifth-grader Erica Campos won Most Kid Fun for her recipe “Chocolate Fondue with Avocado and Carrot.”
