Nixon-Smiley FFA youth wins big in two major shows
Connor Caraway, a member of the Nixon-Smiley FFA, has been working very hard for the past year preparing her show steers for the Fort Worth and San Antonio stock shows. On a daily basis, she washed and blew dry both of her steers to keep them clean, cool, and gentle. Feeding and working with her steers diligently helped ensure they were ready for the show ring, and her dedication paid off.
Connor showed her black exotic steer Feb. 4 at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Her steer placed third out of 71 steers in the heavyweight class, earning the opportunity to sell the animal in the Fort Worth Stock Show auction.
On Feb. 16, Connor showed her Simmental steer in the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, in the middleweight class with a total of 37 steers. Connor’s steer won that class and went on to beat the class winners of the light- and heavyweight divisions, earning the Champion Simmental title.
This qualified her to compete against the other 14 breed champions in the AT&T Center during the rodeo. After it was all said and done, Connor’s steer was named overall reserve grand champion of the 2011 San Antonio show, qualifying her to sell this steer, bringing in $45,000. Connor was also awarded a $10,000 scholarship.
A total of 1,451 steers competed for the top two spots in the San Antonio show.
