SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio community is coming forward to assist those affected by the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami.
However, the American Red Cross is alerting the community to be aware of several scams and frauds in the form of email and text messaging purportedly for donations on behalf of the American Red Cross for Japan, New Zealand and Haiti; the purchase of American Red Cross first aid supplies that are to be shipped abroad; and the impersonation of the British Red Cross.
Scams that we are aware of are:
· Directing individuals to phony or fake websites;
· Requesting donations of monies through money transfer companies, such as Western Union;
· Offering “employment” for individuals to collect monies on behalf of the American Red Cross for a percentage;
· Stating there is an appeal from the “British Red Cross” and request individuals to send monies to an email address, Western Union or via other transfer companies.
To be sure that your donation goes to support the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami, please send donations to the American Red Cross. Those who want to help can go to www.redcross.org and donate to Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. People can also donate $10 by texting REDCROSS to 90999 to support our disaster relief efforts in Japan and throughout the Pacific.
About the American Red Cross:
