KINGSVILLE -- After lifting a whopping 1,100 pounds during the Region 5 Division 3 -- Boys Regional Powerlifting Meet March 12, Stockdale High School sophomore Darion McMahan has qualified to compete in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state meet in Abilene March 25-26.

During his first meet of the year, McMahan lifted a total of 920 pounds through his three lifts. He finished second in the meet, and managed a bench press of 210 pounds, a dead lift of 340 pounds, and a squat of 370 pounds -- impressive numbers for a young man that weighs in at just 131 pounds himself.

During his second competition, McMahan increased his total by 60 pounds, and finished third among a talented field in Poteet. McMahan continued to improve, though, and went on to finish first in two additional meets in Yorktown, increasing his weight totals to 1,010 pounds, and then 1,035 pounds.

Months of hard work paid dividends for McMahan in Kingsville, as he recorded personal bests in all three lifts, and qualified for the state meet. McMahan bench pressed nearly twice his own body weight at 250 pounds, and then powered up more than three times his body weight with a dead lift of 410 pounds and a squat of 440 pounds -- totaling 180 pounds more than he had lifted just a couple of months earlier. McMahan finished third among all regional competitors in the 132-pound class.

McMahan will get a short break from competition, but will continue training for the state meet, where he hopes to improve his lifts even further.
